The MTV Movie Awards debuted in 1992 and immediately made its reputation by poking fun at mainstream Hollywood.
In 2011, the tradition continues as SNL funnyman Jason Sudeikis hosts the 20th annual MTV Movie Awards airing live on Sunday, June 5, at 9 p.m. ET, from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California.
Starting May 3, fans will be able to vote for their favorites in every category at online at MovieAwards.MTV.com until June 4. Voting for Best Movie, however, will stay open throughout the awards show — meaning everyone will have a chance to have their say on the night’s biggest prize until the very last minute.
Nominees honor a current crop of best movie performances – with the coveted Popcorn Award given for “Best Kiss,” “Best Villain,” and “Best Comedic Performance” and other popular MTV Movie Awards categories
In addition, a new category this year also honors the “Best Line from a Movie” (including the snarkiest “If you guys were the inventors of Facebook, you’d have invented Facebook.” from The Social Network.)
2011 MTV Movie Awards contenders
Once again, a top contender this year includes the vampires of “Twilight” — with “Eclipse” grabbing eight nominations — including Best Movie, Best Fight and Best Kiss.
Following closely behind is “Inception” with (seven nominations) and “Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1” with six nods.
All three films have been nominated for Best Movie and will compete with “Black Swan” (four nods) and “The Social Network” (five nods) for the top prize.
Scheduled presenters on the big night include Emma Stone, Selena Gomez, Nicki Minaj, Leighton Meester, Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel, Katie Cassidy and more.
Besides honoring the best movies of the year, also watch for the official trailer for the much-anticipated Breaking Dawn, the fourth and final sequel in the Twilight series, to debut during the show. In addition, a preview of the final sequel in the Harry Potter series, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” will presented by none other than Hermione Granger herself, actress Emma Watson.
