The 43rd annual NAACP Image Awards were held on February 17, 2012 and the big winners included “The Help” stars Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer.
Davis and Spencer took home Image Awards for their roles in the film, which also earned the Outstanding Motion Picture Award. The nominations were announced on January 19, and “The Help” lead the pack with eight nominations.
The adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel about black maids speaking out about their white employers during the civil-rights movement is up for several awards including Outstanding Motion Picture, Outstanding Actress for Emma Stone and Viola Davis, and Outstanding Supporting Actress for Octavia Spencer, Bryce Dallas Howard and Cicely Tyson.
Also earning several honors was “Jumping the Broom,” which garnered Image Awards for stars Mike Epps and Laz Alonso. The film also won the Outstanding Director Award for Salim Akil.
In the television world, “Law & Order: SVU” and “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” won Outstanding Dramatic and Comedic Series categories, respectively. Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Tracee Ellis Ross, LL Cool J and Regina King all earned Image Awards in the television acting categories.
During the NAACP Image Awards, a tribute was held for the late Whitney Houston, who won the 1997 Image Award for Outstanding Lead Actress for her role in “The Preacher’s Wife” and the 1995 Image Award for Entertainer of the Year.
The late Don Cornelius was also honored for “Soul Train”‘s contribution to music.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s Image Awards honor diversity in the arts and will be presented Feb. 17 on NBC.
