Jackson said Wednesday he was considering limiting Bryant’s playing time for a while when the regular season begins Tuesday. Jackson said he wasn’t certain how many minutes Bryant might play, but it wouldn’t be his usual workload.
Bryant averaged almost 39 minutes last season.
“I don’t anticipate he’s going to be playing heavy-minute games to start the season,” Jackson said. “So we’ll have to find a pattern out there, so he has the greatest influence in the amount of minutes he can play.”
Jackson said it was “very possible” he wouldn’t play Bryant in tonight’s exhibition against Golden State in San Diego in order to rest him. The teams play again Friday in Ontario, and Jackson said Bryant would play
Bryant’s lack of a shooting touch has been impossible to miss, too.
He scored seven points on 2-for-13 shooting during the Lakers’ loss to the Utah Jazz on Tuesday at Honda Center. That dropped his exhibition shooting percentage to 27.3.
He is averaging only 11 points in six exhibitions.
Bryant laughed off his sluggish play during a lighthearted session with reporters after the Lakers fell to 2-4 Tuesday. He chuckled while delivering one-word answers on the significance of his shooting woes.
Above all, he made it clear he wasn’t troubled by his knee or missed shots.
“I’m out of answers, guys,” he said at one point. “It is what it is.”
