Lauryn Noel Hill-Marley (born May 25, 1975) is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer, arranger, and actress. She initially established her reputation as the most visible and vocal member of The Fugees. On August 25, 1998 she launched her solo career by releasing the critically lauded album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, bringing the then-emerging neo-soul genre to a wider commercial platform.
After a four year hiatus, she released the controversial MTV Unplugged No. 2.0; a live album of completely original material (except for So Much Things to Say and The Conquering Lion). She has won eight Grammy Awards and is the mother of four children with Rohan Marley, the seventh son of reggae legend Bob Marley.
Last month, an unreleased Lauryn Hill track called ‘Repercussions‘ hit the ‘Net, leading fans to question whether or not the song was new or unearthed from the studio vaults. But the track, managed to crack the charts, making it her first solo tune to land on Billboard since November 1998.
‘Repercussions’ debuted this week at No. 94 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Hill graced the charts in 2006 after the Method Man track ‘Say,’ which features the West Orange, N.J. native, landed at No. 10 on the same chart.
The success of the song coincides with the gradual return of Ms. Hill to the spotlight following a few years of bizarre behavior and rare appearances. With the release of new material, fans have speculated that Hill could be gearing up to release a follow-up album to her sole studio LP, ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,’ which has sold more than eight million copies since its 1998 release.
With a few recent festival appearances under her belt, Hill plans to headline this year’s Rock the Bells tour beginning next month. The annual fest will also feature acts such as Wu-Tang Clan, Snoop Dogg, A Tribe Called Quest and more performing their respective classic albums in their entirety.
Lauryn may be emerging from her self-imposed musical exile in a big way this year, having already performed at the Harmony Festival in California and spoken in detail to NPR. But as we first reported yesterday, behold! There is new Lauryn Hill music available! And it’s good!
Tickets are on sale for the New York leg of the Rock The Bells Festival, happening August 28th on Governors Island, where we will all be able to witness Lauryn Hill in person, performing The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in it’s classic entirety.
