Conya Doss is definitely a product of her surroundings. Her albums speak of the soulful sounds of the 70’s, especially Curtis Mayfield. Her albums arrangements definitely give me the soundtrack feel of Mayfield’s 70’s hits like “Sparkle” and “Claudine.” In an era of electronic arrangements Ms. Doss’s material harkens us back to full bands and originality. When I first heard this album, I thought again? Yet that is the very essence of Conya Doss, she is consistent in her calling of a soulful songstress. While her voice may not be a big instrument like a Whitney or a Patti LaBelle, her raspy tone is comforting and assured. Pair that with her songs of encouragement and hope and love on this new release and you get a winning and consistent release. There is so much here to enjoy from the funkiness of “Reaching For The Stars,” to the piano laden ballad “I’ll Say Yes,” and the ballad “What About Me and You,” with Chris McNeal, Ms. Doss is again in her prime. Throughout the journey of “A Pocketful of Purpose,” you will find this album building upon her reputation for soulful music and direction. Put this album on and chill the wine, lower the lights and enjoy the world of Conya Doss, again and again.
