-Whitney Houston- —Jordin Sparks— ‘Celebrate’

The Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks duet, titled ‘Celebrate’, is lifted from the ‘Sparkle’soundtrack and premiered on Ryan Seacrest‘s radio show today. This is Whitney’s last ever recording, produced by R. Kelly.

‘Celebrate’ is a very uplifting and fun song, with a similar vibe reminiscent to Whitney’s own’Million Dollar Bill’. It has a 70s feel to it which would sit nicely during the disco era and shows that Whitney’s vocals had in deed improved. She was giving us some nice falsetto and riffs in between, as well as a fantastic bridge of gorgeous harmonising.

Whitney seemed like she was in a very happy place during shooting of the movie, so it’s hard to fathom what could have went wrong from there.

It is no secret that Whitney Houston’s legendary voice had lost its luster long before her tragic death and her final recording reminds us of exactly how hollow her instrument had become.‘Celebrate’ is a duet between the late diva and Jordin Sparks that will appear on the soundtrack to Houston’s last film project, ‘Sparkle’.

Alongside John Legend, Sparks paid tribute to Houston at the 2012 Billboard Music Awardswith a rendition of ‘I Will Always Love You’. She also presented Pat Houston and Bobbi Kristina with the Billboard Millenium Award.

The life of Houston was truly a tragedy as we watched her crumble throughout the years. Of course, the loss of her voice was one of the most unfortunate side effects of her drug use and ‘Celebrate’ emphasises that point. Indeed, sounding thin, raspy, inflexible and strained, Houston’s voice was barely a shadow of its former glory.

Yet, nothing that we hear today could tarnish Houston’s legacy because she enjoyed several wonderful years as a vocal powerhouse.

The Salim Akil-directed musical will hit U.S. theatres on August 17th.
